Hannah Coppa: Left with a "good job in the City."
When Hannah Coppa, 20, came to Opportunity Junction, it was out of a sense of desperation. Although she had worked since the age of 16, she had been laid off from her job at the golf course, and she couldn't find work.
Hannah's relationship with her parents was turbulent, and she had moved out at age 19. After the layoff, she sent out hundreds of resumes and, over the course of six months, scored only one job interview. "Before I came [to Opportunity Junction], I just wanted a job because I needed a job, because I needed money," Hannah recalls. "I just figured I would take whatever I could get. I was pretty insecure."
At Opportunity Junction, Hannah worked with Catherine Warren, Director of Counseling, to address the issues she had with her parents and her underlying insecurities. "It really helped," says Hannah. "My relationship with my parents has totally improved, and I talk to my mom almost every day now."
It also helped, Hannah explains, "to realize that I really am pretty good with computers, that I'm not half bad." In fact, Hannah was selected as the Technology Assistant during her internship, imaging computers and performing other desktop maintenance tasks in addition to her administrative projects.
Hannah left Opportunity Junction in December with a position as receptionist at a law firm in San Francisco, and she is thrilled. "I never thought that the job that I would get would be this good job in the City. I love the City! I have always loved the bigness of it -- you're this small little person with so much going on around you." Meanwhile, she and her boyfriend Barrett have moved into "a great house, with cable and Internet" right here in East County.
When the reception desk at the office is quiet, Hannah is learning the firm's filing system, and she loves reading up on the cases the firm is handling, though she won't mention specifics. She hopes to attend school to become a paralegal, but in the meantime, "It's just so much fun to be there!"

This year, your gift means more than ever. There is no matching grant, just us, together, supporting this work. We met our year-end fundraising goal, and we are 97% of the way toward our March 31 goal. We need less than $2,000 to meet that goal, and your donation will help get us there.
Your support is what makes it possible for us to serve Kourvahcia, and Hannah, and the thirteen interns of Class 30, and the 20 candidates we've offered admission to Class 31, and our 500 evening learners, and the 200 working families who will use Do-It-Yourself Tax Assistance to build their financial stability. Your donations, connections, volunteering, and support have helped Kourvahcia and her fellow alumni create opportunities by learning how to become indispensible employees.
We thank you on behalf of the families: children proud of parents, and parents proud of children. "Now I set a better example for my daughters, who are awesome in school, straight-A students." You are a part of this, and we invite you to join this year's campaign.
Please consider an online donation now! We pay no credit card fees on donations made online using Google checkout (or on checks sent via US mail). Please join the generous donors who have helped us get to 97%:

Class 30 Interns are ready to work!
The Job Training and Placement program's 30th class graduated from training on December 17 and has now moved into internship - that's thirteen people who could be doing temporary or permanent work for you or your organization right now!
When employers hire our interns on a temporary basis, the interns get valuable work experience, and employers get hard-working and cost-effective temporary help - plus the option to hire without any placement fee. Employers may be able to receive or carry forward a Work Opportunity Tax Credit of up to $9,000 for permanent hires - talk to our staff for details.

Antioch mayor Jim Davis was the guest speaker for the ceremony. The City of Antioch supports our programs and organizations in many ways, from partnering on work experience for our interns, to grants through the Community Development Block Grant program. We are grateful for Mayor Davis' support.
Thanks also to David Fraser for taking great pictures of the graduation, including this photo of Mayor Jim Davis and Executive Director Alissa Friedman. Facebook users can see more of David's work here.

Job Training and Placement Program Class 31 selected, starts Feb. 1
Class 31 of the Job Training and Placement program starts February 1. As with previous classes, the training will include twelve weeks of intensive study in computer skills as well as life and business skills, preparing graduates for work in office occupations. In addition, participants receive training in Managing the Green Office and Financial Skills.
The selection process was not an easy one - we saw almost 200 applicants, with a variety of backgrounds, from new high-school graduates to folks with twenty years experience in construction, finance or office work. We referred many people to local resources such as EASTBAY Works, Stride Center, Rubicon Programs, and more.
We've posted our list of free and low-cost job training resources, with a focus on East Contra Costa County, on our website. If you know of resources we should add, please let us know - email Jesse Golden.
