Jessica Silver: "Now I know that when I work hard I can accomplish my goals"
With a retail job working nights, Jessica Silver didn't have time to spend with her 2 year old son Zackary or a career path that could ensure their futures. She moved from Texas to California, where she had a support network of family, hoping to find a career and become self-sufficient.
After looking for months and not being hired, even for positions at McDonalds or Taco Bell, Jessica knew she needed something more. "I needed training, but all the programs I saw cost too much money. I was frustrated and beaten-down. I wanted to work -- I just needed someone to give me a chance," Jessica says.
That's when she saw the flyer for Opportunity Junction's Job Training and Placement Program. Once in the program, Jessica immediately impressed her Computer Skills instructor, Norman Cheng. "I knew Jessica was facing a lot of road blocks before coming to Opportunity. But she excelled in the training and was driven in accomplishing all she needed to do to complete the program and to get a job. We could see she had a potential that I don't think she even saw in herself."
Jessica's success in the program helped build her confidence to find employment. Jessica shares, "Michelle [Stewart, Manager of Professional Development] would help me make my resumes and cover letters look good. She saw traits in me than I had never recognized."
Michelle's confidence in Jessica was proven when she sent Jessica's resume to the City of Pittsburg as an applicant for an internship assignment. Jessica impressed her supervisor, and this temporary placement through Opportunity Junction's Staffing Services turned into a permanent position at the Pittsburg Senior Center.
With Michelle's continued nudging and Jessica's new-found confidence, Jessica also attended Independence High School Diploma program and graduated in May of this year.
"I have accomplished so much in the last year and a half-I have completed the Job Training and Placement Program, bought my own car, found a job, and earned my high school diploma. I am so happy and proud of myself. My son can be proud of me now, too."
You did it. This year, because of you, we expanded our programs, served more people, and lifted more families out of poverty. As individual donors, you invested 60% more dollars than last year, and as volunteers, you spent 50% more hours training, tutoring, consulting, planning events, and governing. The IMAGINE gala raised 35% more net revenue than the previous year, too! We were also pleased to receive new foundation support for employer outreach, matching grants to drive donations during December, Recovery Act support for program expansion, an Americorps VISTA to develop our volunteer infrastructure, our first donation of stock, and support from so many others. As a direct result: We do face challenges going forward. Accepting 20% more candidates to the first week of job training has required more resources down the pipeline, and Recovery Act funding for that initiative ends in December. Other government partners are working with smaller budgets and passing on cuts to those of us providing direct services. Continuing work with employer partners is necessary to develop positions with higher starting wages. Yet, job training and placement -- and the wrap-around services and programs we provide -- remain critical priorities in East County, as outlined in "Job Training and Placement: A Critical Priority in East County. With long-term unemployment unacceptably high and families and children suffering, we are committed to exploring ways to expand and deepen our impact here in East County. Unfortunately, we will soon be doing so without long-time Deputy Director Jesse Golden, who joined us in 2003 to launch the Technology Center. The Technology Center would not be what it is today without her: it is designed from strands of her DNA, from the thoughtful curriculum for beginning English and computer learners through the leveraging of our community's vast volunteer talent. Throughout her tenure, Jesse has excelled at building relationships to help fund our programs, recruit program candidates, and place participants into employment. She is resigning at the end of September to pursue a long-time dream -- facilitating more economic activity among local businesses -- and we will miss her. Becky Nielson recently highlighted these resources for Job Seekers: Thanks, Becky and Alyson and the Contra Costa Library, for providing these great resources! Join us on August 18 to celebrate the graduation of Class 35 of the Job Training and Placement Program at the El Campanil Theater in downtown Antioch
We will be joined by special guest speaker Gary Agopian, City of Antioch Councilmember. Gary was elected in 2004 to the school board in Antioch and served as board vice president and board president. Elected to the Antioch City Council in 2010, Gary has also been on the Antioch Economic Development Commission, was the chair of fundraising for the Gateway Centers For Learning, and has served 4 years with the Youth Intervention Network.
Class 35 has studied long hours, often tutoring each other late into Friday evenings, completing the arduous 12-week program including training in Microsoft Office, QuickBooks, Financial Literacy, and Life Skills. Clarina Martinez, member of Class 35, says, "Opportunity Junction is giving me the skills and real-world experience I need in order to succeed. I am becoming a lot more secure and confident in myself. Opportunity Junction is making this happen for me."
Unlike most graduations, which mark the end of education, our graduations celebrate the first big milestone of our program - the completion of twelve weeks of full-time training. Members of Class 35 will continue in the Job Training and Placement Program as paid interns, gaining work experience while beginning their intensive search for jobs. If you know of employers who may need temporary or ongoing office assistance, please contact our staff - Class 35 has sharpened their computer skills, proved their work ethic, and emerged job-ready!
The El Campanil Theater is located at 602 W. 2nd Street in downtown Antioch. The ceremony begins at 7:00 pm sharp and is open to the public.
Check our website for times when you can see the graduation televised by Contra Costa TV, Astound channel 32 or AT&T U-verse channel 99.
Recruitment for Class 36 will start soon after graduation, as usual. Application sessions will be held on September 6th, 12th, and 19th at our Antioch office starting at 10 am sharp. We will also hold an application session at the SparkPoint East Contra Costa at Bay Point's Ambrose Community Center on September 7th at 10 am sharp. Candidates can sign up online for more information and to get a reminder when the application period approaches. Class 34 intern Maggie Bruce, who provided front-desk assistance in July through Opportunity Junction’s Staffing Services, says her duties included answering the phones, handling bus pass transactions, and preparing mailings. “It wasn’t hard to learn their systems, but when three people call at once, and there’s someone waiting for service at the front desk, it can be challenging,” shared Maggie. As an Opportunity Junction Hiring Partner, Tri Delta Transit has been pleased with their occasional use of Staffing Services. “The interns we’ve had here on assignment have learned quickly,” says CEO Jeanne Krieg. “They’re good with customer service and willing to tackle any project we have.” Tri Delta Transit has also donated space on 61 of their fixed route buses for informational posters about Opportunity Junction. “It’s a service to our passengers to let them know about these programs,” Jeanne Krieg adds. Thanks to Tri Delta Transit for their support! For information about Staffing Services and the Hiring Partners Program, contact Brianna Burkman at Opportunity Junction.

The par-72 golf course at Roddy Ranch Golf Club in Antioch, California measures over 7000 yards from the back tees and was designed by J. Michael Poellot, ASGCA. Carved from a 2000-acre working cattle ranch, our course's 235 acres offer a true links-style layout over a canvas of an exquisite landscape. Undulating greens and strategically placed bunkers challenge every aspect of your short game. Pre-registration is required for this class, at the Computer Basics Sign-Up page on our website.
